Ask A Genetist.....

Q: I realize that humans have 46 chromosomes and chimps 48, but do we (homo sapiens) have more genes or fewer genes than the chimp?



A: What I learned from the reading is that humans and chimps have 98% the same genes. I always knew we came from chimps some how but I would have never guessed that it was 98%. Another thing I learned was that we used to have the exact same number of chromosomes but during evolution they split apart as in humans or chimps either gained lost or copied genes. So Flo Pauli says that they do have the same number of genes. Therefore the only reason we are different physical appearance wise is because well first genes tell proteins what to do/make, and in chimps it tells them to make more hair for instance. Also the genes for the brain in the chimp don't tell the proteins to do the same that is in humans that's why they are less intellectual. All in all i learned that

Class Reflection

The following unit we did in class has so far been the most fun. I enjoyed dissecting the flowers. The reason i enjoyed this was because i enjoy doing hands-on activities. One thing i learned reminded me of when we did cell reproduction. It reminded me of when a cell reproduces with itself and it has identical off spring compared to when it reproduces with another cell to make a different looking cell. The reason it reminds me of this is because, when pollen from another flower gets on a different flower's pistil it will have a hybrid flower, apart from if a flowers own pollen falls on it's own pistil it will make a flower that looks just like it. To me it was quite interesting information.

While playing the game i tryed to see if two yello plants can make a green plant.(pea). What I came across was that the first two they give you is one yellow wrinkled and one green smooth, that made 3 yellow wrinkled and one green smooth. The first time I mixed together two of the yellow wrinkled one was yy Rr and the other was Yy Rr in the end it made the same effect yellow and one green. The second time I did this, I mixed the green with a yellow and I get all green wrinkled so then I said that green "parents" can not make yellow offspring.

While reading the following information i learned some things. For example, i learned that humans share dna, about 99.9% to be exact. I was shocked, because people look very different from each other. While hearing about heredity, i learned that everyones parents have 23 chromosones, it forms a zygote. The zygote is made of 46 chromosomes, (2 x 23) later on in development it forms a baby. This stage in development is the reason for why one child can look like only a certain parent or a mixture of both parents. In the end i learned many things.

Let me start off by saying soory for the late entry.
Can you believe that paper can be used as a batterie. Well researchers state that by using a corbon based ink on normal printer paper layers they could powere things. It was first explored years ago. First the coat the paper in the ink then they heat it so the ink is "stained" into the paper it then is rolled and can be conducted. So not only does the paper batterie save money but it's recycleable. Some people ( look at comments) believe it might not work they believe in something else.

At first people just thought that it camouflaged but now scientist believe that it can acctually change colors. Rolf B. says that in an experiment wen he would move the spider around on many different colored flowers only once did it get attacked. The crab spider coloration changing has been unraveled since 2001, which remindes people of how bees use ultraviolet lights to see flowers even though the spider doesnt use uv lights but is in uv flowers. Scientist believe that only females change color. So perhaps their eggs will produce a larger population of color changing spiders?
